Jenni wanted to sample a career in childcare – a Foundation Apprenticeship let her do that.

Jenni's
journey

At 16 years old, Jenni didn't know what she wanted to work as. In school, she often asked herself, ‘What am I going to do with my life?’

The Aberdeen-based teenager thought about following in her mum’s footsteps and working in social care. But Jenni wanted to get a taste of the industry before committing to it.

So, she chose a Skills for Work course. Jenni’s teacher watched her thrive as she learnt how to work with children and young people. In fact, she was so impressed that she encouraged Jenni to do a Foundation Apprenticeship.

apprenticeship

Shortly after starting S6, Jenni found the answer to those career questions she used to ask herself. Thanks to a Foundation Apprenticeship, Jenni discovered what she wanted to do with her life.

The St Machar Academy pupil showed her natural talent for childcare. Jenni spent a day each week working at Kaimhill Nursery, where she planned and led activities. Meanwhile, Aberlour Futures helped her complete the unit assessments.

Jenni enjoyed her work experience so much; she decided to volunteer an extra two days per week at the nursery.

The future

When Jenni left school, she knew she wanted to get back into a nursery. Her achievements at Kaimhill were recognised at the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards. She won the Foundation Apprentice of the Year category.

Jenni's Foundation Apprenticeship helped her land a role as an Early Years Assistant at another nursery in Aberdeen. This’ll allow her to gain a Modern Apprenticeship.

Speaking about her ambitions, Jenni said, ‘I want to become a fully qualified practitioner. I’m keen to gain more experience and work my way through the ranks.’
