Martyna Guziel worked in a supported housing unit to give her nursing career a shot in the arm.
Martyna's journey
Martyna was thriving at school. She already had four Highers in the bag and was preparing to study another three in S6. On top of this, Martyna had been elected as Head Girl.
The Borders-based pupil had her eye on a few nursing courses at university. She chose a Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services and Healthcare to learn about caring for others. Plus, she knew it'd look amazing on her UCAS application.
Martyna said, ‘It gave me practical experience and a real insight into caring roles. I quickly decided that nursing was the right career for me.’
Martyna's apprenticeship
Martyna’s work placement at Wilkie Gardens was everything she wanted. She developed great relationships with everyone she worked alongside. On her first day, she rolled around the floor like a worm during a lively game of animal charades. The residents loved it!
But Martyna also developed traditional social care skills. These included safeguarding, health and safety and how to communicate with residents.
As the young apprentice built new skills – the residents did too! Martyna made this happen by organising a series of interactive social events within the unit.
Martyna’s creativity was celebrated at the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards. She made it to the final of the Foundation Apprentice of the Year category.

The future
Martyna’s Foundation Apprenticeship paid off! She highlighted all the skills she learned at Wilkie Gardens on her UCAS form. Now, the former apprentice is studying Adult Nursing at Glasgow Caledonian University.
And the former Galashiels Academy pupil has big career ambitions! Martyna wants to specialise in skincare and dermatology once she graduates. It’s her dream to work in a skincare clinic.
Housing Manager Mandy Johnstone worked closely with Martyna at Wilkie Gardens. Mandy said, ‘Martyna was an absolute pleasure – she communicated so well with our residents. She facilitated the majority of activities on her own.’
