Description

This apprenticeship supports Scotland's hospitality sector. It's designed to help businesses fill entry-level hospitality roles across front of house and back of house. This includes food and beverage, accommodation and lodging, and conferences and events.

There are a number of roles available at this level. Here are some of them:

  • bartender

  • server

  • barista

  • crew

  • team member

  • receptionist

  • guest host

  • housekeeping assistant

Your employee will study for a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this apprenticeship.

However, the apprentice must be employed in a suitable job role. This means they'll gain the experience and knowledge they need to achieve the Modern Apprenticeship and the associated SCQF Level 5 qualification. In addition, an apprentice should:

  • have good communication skills

  • display a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the hospitality sector

  • be happy to adhere to a flexible working pattern

  • enjoy working as part of a team and interacting with others

  • be prepared to attend off-the-job training

Progression and development

To successfully complete the apprenticeship, your employee must pass all the competence-based and professional qualifications. Successful apprentices may progress to:

  • a higher-level role in the same (or related) career path

  • higher-level apprenticeships in the same (or related) disciplines. These could be Hospitality (Supervision and Leadership) at SCQF Level 7 or Hospitality Management Skills Technical Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 8

  • further study at college or university

How does it work?

Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.

Cost and funding

We contribute towards training costs

We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?

Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.

How long will it take?

This apprenticeship is expected to take around 12 months to complete.
