What's Engineering Construction like?

What's the qualification?

You'll gain a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6 or 7. 

Your qualification includes:

SCQF Level 6

Apprentices will achieve one of the following:

  • ECITB* Diploma in Engineering Construction Design and Draughting, at SCQF Level 6

  • ECITB Diploma in Installing Plant and Systems – Pipefitting, at SCQF Level 6

  • ECITB Diploma in Moving Engineering Construction Loads, at SCQF Level 6

SCQF Level 7

Apprentices will achieve one of the following:

  • ECITB* Diploma in Maintaining Plant and Systems – Electrical, at SCQF Level 7

  • ECITB Diploma in Maintaining Plant and Systems – Instrumentation and Controls, at SCQF Level 7

  • ECITB Diploma in Maintaining Plant and Systems – Mechanical, at SCQF Level 7

What will I learn?

During your apprenticeship, you'll learn how to:   

  • Mark out components for metalwork

  • Cut and shape materials using thermal cutting equipment 

  • Form pipework by machine bending 

  • Produce pipe fabrications

  • Weld materials with mechanised arc welding equipment

  • Produce sheet metal assemblies 

      

You will develop the following core skills:   

  • Time management 

  • Problem-solving 

  • Communication  

  • Teamwork 

These transferrable skills are useful for working in other jobs such as construction and mechanical engineering.  

Where could it take me?

This Modern Apprenticeship gives you a variety of studying and job options. Carry on your education with a higher qualification in engineering construction or find a full-time job.   

Further education: Carry on your studies by applying for a degree in mechanical engineering. The experience you have gained will support your university application.   

Straight to work: Use your qualifications and find a job in the engineering construction industry. Several are listed below: 

  • Welder

  • Construction operative

  • Mechanical engineer

  • Instrument control technician  

  • Steel erector 

  • Pipe fitter

  • Sheet metal worker 

Entry requirements

Although there are no set requirements for the apprenticeship, it is useful to have engineering experience.   

How does it work?

You’ll learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. You’ll also study with a college or another learning provider. 

How long will it take?

This Modern Apprenticeship will take around 4 years to complete.
