Description
This Modern Apprenticeship will help you recruit employees who are completely new to civil engineering, or upskill existing members of staff. That's why it's available at two levels.
The apprenticeship will prepare employees to work in roles across a range of civil engineering areas, including:
construction operations
highway maintenance and roadbuilding
plant maintenance
formwork
plant operations

SCQF Level 5
core units of an SVQ in Civil Engineering at SCQF Level 5
work experience in an industry that is safety-orientated and creative

Entry requirements
There are no set entry requirements for this apprenticeship at either level.
Progression and development
SCQF Level 5
There are clear progression routes within the framework. Your employee could move on to an SCQF Level 6 Modern Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering or Building Occupations.
An apprentice could also progress from specialist roles into supervisory technical occupations at SCQF Level 6, or Technical and Professional apprenticeships.
They may choose to enter further or higher education in a related subject.

Your employee could progress from specialist occupations into supervisory technical occupations at SCQF Level 6, or Technical and Professional Apprenticeships.
They may choose to enter further or higher education in a related subject.
How does it work?
Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.
Cost and funding
We contribute towards training costs
We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?
Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.
How long will it take?
This Modern Apprenticeship will take between 12 and 24 months to complete.
