What's Community Development like?
Community development is an approach to achieving social change. You can help those suffering from disadvantage and social injustice and improve the lives of vulnerable people in our communities. If you're looking for regular training and growth in a diverse sector, this is the apprenticeship for you.
Help individuals, families or whole communities to address inequalities and have their say. You might:
help homeless teenagers find accommodation
help students with physical or behavioural support needs
raise public awareness on issues relevant to the community
There's a wide range of jobs available to you upon completion of this apprenticeship with plenty of scope for progression.
You will gain a Modern Apprenticeship in Community Development at SCQF Level 5 or Level 6.

Your qualification includes:
core units of an SVQ in Community Development at SCQF Level 5
a range of optional units
core units of an SVQ in Community Development at SCQF Level 6
a range of optional units
To achieve your qualification, you’ll be assessed during work. You’ll learn how to:
relate to different communities
promote and support relationships between communities and public bodies
support inclusive and collective working
monitor and evaluate community development activities
Your apprenticeship will also help you to develop the following core skills:
communication
working with others
problem-solving
information and Communication Technology
numeracy
These skills are transferable and will help your chances of getting a job in a variety of roles and sectors.
Your Modern Apprenticeship gives you lots of options. You could further your education through another apprenticeship or work in community development full time.
Further study: By completing your Modern Apprenticeship you could go on to study for an HNC in working with communities or it could support your application to a degree in community education with youth work.
Straight to work: Use the knowledge you’ve gained to get a job such as:
community activist
community centre worker (including running community facilities and running community groups)
outreach and/or support worker
ESOL tutor
family learning worker
education coordinator
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements for this apprenticeship but an interest in helping people would be beneficial.
How does it work?
You’ll learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. You’ll also study with a college or another learning provider.
How long will it take?
This Modern Apprenticeship will take 12 to 24 months to complete.
