Description

This Modern Apprenticeship is offered at two levels. It's designed to help you support entry-level employees in professional kitchens and associated premises. This includes restaurants, cafés, food trucks, pubs, bars and hotels.

The apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5 is aimed at employees looking for a role as an:

  • apprentice chef

  • commis chef

  • preparation chef

  • kitchen assistant

The apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6 is aimed at employees who want to specialise in roles like:

  • demi chef de partie

  • junior chef

  • pastry chef

Your employee will study for a Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 5 or 6.

Entry requirements

There are no set entry criteria to the Chef Modern Apprenticeship at Level 5 or 6. Although, the apprentice should be passionate about food and willing to learn. An apprentice should also:

  • have good communication skills

  • show enthusiasm to work with a variety of food types

  • be willing to work in fast paced environments

  • have a positive attitude towards learning and working with others

  • be prepared to adhere to a flexible working pattern

Progression and development

To successfully complete the apprenticeship, your employee must pass all the competence-based and professional qualifications. The apprenticeship will allow your employee to progress in work or move on to further study.

Successful apprentices at SCQF Level 5 may progress to:

  • a more senior role in professional cookery

  • higher-level apprenticeships in the same, or related, disciplines

  • further study at college or university

Successful apprentices at SCQF Level 6 may progress to:

  • a more senior role in professional cookery

  • higher-level apprenticeships. These include Hospitality (Supervision and Leadership) at SCQF Level 7 or Hospitality Management Skills Technical Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 8

  • further study at college or university

How does it work?

Apprentices will learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. They’ll also study with a college or other learning provider.

Cost and funding

We contribute towards training costs

We do this by paying the learning provider throughout the apprenticeship.

An enhanced funding contribution is paid for employees aged 16 to 19. For those who are disabled and care-experienced, this is extended up to and including age 29.

Who pays the apprentice?

Like any other employee of your business, you’ll pay the Modern Apprentice's wages. This is not set by SDS, but we encourage all employers to pay the Living Wage. Remember, you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage.

How long will it take?

This apprenticeship will take around 12 months to complete.
