What's Automotive like?

Study for an automotive apprenticeship and find a job you’re passionate about. This apprenticeship helps you develop vehicle maintenance and body repair skills. Whether you like classic cars or modern motors, you’ll find a role that suits you. 

What's the qualification?

You’ll gain a Modern Apprenticeship in Automotive at SCQF Level 5, 6 or 7.

Your qualification includes:

SCQF Level 5

  • Vehicle maintenance and repair at SCQF Level 5

  • Vehicle accident repair at SCQF Level 5

  • Vehicle parts at SCQF Level 5

  • Vehicle fitting at SCQF Level 5

SCQF Level 5

  • Vehicle accident repair at SCQF Level 6

  • Vehicle parts at SCQF Level 6

SCQF Level 5

  • Vehicle maintenance and repair at SCQF Level 7

SCQF qualification levels explained

What will I learn?

As part of your work, you’ll learn how to:   

  • inspect a car

  • repair the body of a vehicle

  • fit different parts

  • restore the paint of a vehicle

You’ll also develop the following core skills:

  • time management

  • working with others

  • communication

  • problem-solving

These skills can be transferred to different roles, like heavy vehicle work or tyre fitting.  

Where could it take me?

You have a range of options to explore with this Modern Apprenticeship. You could continue to study in a relevant automotive field or go into full time work.   

Further education: Carry on your studies by progressing to a degree in automotive engineering. Your experience will support your university application.     

Straight to work: Make the most of your qualifications and get a job in the automotive industry. You could go on to the following roles:  

  • light vehicle service technician

  • heavy vehicle technician

  • motorcycle service technician

  • lift truck service technician

  • paintwork technician

  • mechanical, electrical and trim (MET) technician

  • parts adviser

  • fast-fit (vehicle fitting) technician

  • specialist tyre fitter

  • body repair technician

There are no set entry requirements for this apprenticeship.

How does it work?

You’ll learn in a real-world environment and earn a wage. You’ll also study with a college or another learning provider. 

How long will it take?

This Modern Apprenticeship will take around 4 years to complete.
